SUNDAY SCHOOL

The Drive of Love; Living by the Spirit of the Holidays Season

The season of holidays is just around the corner. The Thanksgiving holiday is another opportunity to offer thanks to God. Among the several projects that are taking place during this season is the Drive of Love; the Philoptochos of Saint Barbara and the Sunday school of Saint Demetrios are working together on a wonderful project inspired by the spirit of thanksgiving and service to others.

Within our own neighborhood, and only in one of the high schools that many children attend from Saint Demetrios parish there are thirteen homeless families and another fifteen families in need.

Philoptochos of Saint Barbara and Saint Demetrios Sunday school through your support will participate in providing gifts of love to these children and their families in the name of Jesus Christ; the God of love for all humanity.

Please bring to the church by Sunday the 20th of November your non-perishable food offerings to be blessed before they are delivered to the counsel at the school and forwarded to the beneficiary families. The aim is to deliver the gifts to the families before the close of the school. The basket will be set in a way where the thirteen homeless families can have two meals a day during the holidays, and the other fifteen families will receive a thanksgiving basket.

For further information about the type of non-perishable food or other items that you may provide: Please contact Raven Kastis at [email protected] or Voula Koulouris at [email protected]

Thanks for your help in assisting these families and for making it possible for the youth at Saint Demetri-os to get hands-on experience serving people that are going through challenging times. Being thoughtful of others’ challenges and needs, and being sensitive to their pain and difficulties is a crucial message of the holiday season.

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17)

SUNDAY SCHOOL OCALA MONASTERIES PILGRIMAGE

The Sunday school team took advantage of the Martin Luther King Day to organize a pilgrimage to the monasteries in Ocala for the benefit of the Sunday school children as well as the St. Demetrios families. The visit was pleasant and joyful. Everyone had nice time, and came back with many fond and sweet memories. Thank you to all of the Sunday school team for their initiative and ideas.

Thank you goes to all parents for making the backpack blessing last Sunday a happy and laughter filed event. Without the dedication of parents and their hard work, it would have not been possible for the entire community to cherish the presence of the children and the joy they bring with them.

Thank you to the entire Sunday school team of teachers and volunteers for investing their time and talents to care for these children that are precious God-given gifts.

THANK YOU VOULA KOULOURIS

20150621_130740Thank you to Voula Koulouris for taking up the challenge of heading the Sunday school ministry, and thank you to the entire team of teachers and volunteers, those that have come back, and the new additions. May God bless the volunteers of the Sunday school family for investing their time and talents to care for the Saint Demetrios children. They are precious God-given invaluable gifts and taking care of their Christian education is an awesome undertaking and one that is highly rewarded by God, Jesus Christ the prototype and teacher of all.

Sunday September 6th will mark the first day of Sunday school classes. The blessing service of the start of the school year will take place at the church nave following the reading of the holy gospel around 10:15. Please be on time.

After the children have received the Holy Communion, they will go down stairs to start their classes along with their teachers.
